Our first Community Cake – Recruiting and retaining volunteers

What a fantastic evening! It just goes to show that when you put the right people together, magic can happen!

IMG_2504Last night we held our first Community Cake event on the topic recruiting and retaining volunteers. Over twenty local organisations were represented including; Transition Linlithgow, Linlithgow Civic Trust, Linlithgow Twinning Association, Linlithgow Folk Festival, Black Bitch Magazine, West Lothian Clarion, Linlithgow Community Development Trust, Linlithgow and Linlithgow Bridge Children’s Gala Day, Girlguiding Linlithgow, Linlithgow Link, West Lothian Junior Chess Club, Linlithgow Rose CFC, Low Port Primary PTA, Linlithgow Round table, Linlithgow 10k, Springfield Primary Parent Council, Linlithgow Speakers, Linlithgow Arts Guild, Linlithgow Athletic Club and Burgh Beautiful.

We started with some cake and a cup of tea after which each group had two minutes to speak. The groups were asked; Who are you? What are your most recent achievements? What are your current challenges? What are your top tips for recruiting and retaining volunteers? It was quite a lot to cover in two minutes, but a lot of fun was hand anticipating the ‘gong’!¬†We also heard from guest speaker Jennifer Ba of West Lothian Voluntary Sector Gateway, giving us her expertise on the subject.

Our host, Rebecca Holmes of Linlithgow Community Development Trust, collated the Top Tips onto a flip chart. You can read our collated top tips by clicking here.

All of this was topped off with LOTS of tea and cake, and some wonderful new connections made between groups. There were some wonderful examples of collaborative working including; the West Lothian Junior Chess Club talking to Linlithgow Link – to see if some of the Link clients are chess players willing to engage with the young chess players and; the Roundtable discussing sharing resources with the local PTAs.

The feedback so far has been fantastic. Many comments were made about how nice it was to be amongst like minded folk, all working hard for the community. There was a lovely, positive, atmosphere and all are looking forward to the next event!
